Back Home

I am finally back in Colorado Springs after a long day of traveling. Thankfully, it was a relatively painless flight with no major delays or lost baggage (which seems to happen to me quite often!). My last few days in Beijing were fantastic. I went to another USA Men's Basketball game against Germany (I also went to USA-China, which was the most watched sporting event in history), had a traditional Peking Duck dinner with the entire USA Gymnastics delegation, continued to enjoy the Beijing night life, and watched USA Gymnastics rack up some more medals during finals. On the men's side, we were able to get one more medal, a silver on high bar, with one of the most incredible performances I have ever seen. It easily could have been a gold medal and I think that a majority of the crowd, including some Chinese fans, thought so too. With that last medal USAG ended up tallying a total of ten medals, which is one more than Athens. I think it is the most medals for USAG in a non-boycotted Olympic Games. I guess you could say we had a successful Olympics!
Overall I'll probably look back at my Olympic experience as a defining moment in my life. Learning how to deal with an tough and unexpected situation can teach you a lot about the person you are, and the person you are to become. It is more apparent to me than ever that it is so important to make the best of the situation you are given, and to make sure you are constantly learning even in a less than ideal situation. I did learn a lot about myself in Beijing, and I am going to take those experiences and apply what I learned to other aspects of my life.
So now I am back in Colorado and I am waiting to decide my next move. As of right now I don't know whether or not I will be doing to the Post Olympic Tour. I would love to be a part of it, but I have not been asked so we will see what happens. If I don't do the tour then I will probably take a vacation back home and try to enjoy the rest of the summer in Jersey. I need to spend some down time with my friends and family back home and I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone.

Dave, welcome home! I am sure that whatever it is you decide to do in your future you will be successful. You have shown true class and determination. If you want to be on the tour I hope you are asked. I pray for great things for your future.

I have so enjoyed reading your blog during the past 2 weeks and will continue to keep track of your future success. Your attitude of making the best of a situation is what makes successful people. Those that dwell on the bad don't tend to make it but those that make the best of whatever situation end up winners.

Good luck to you in all you do and enjoy your down time with friends and family.

Dave, I am so happy to have found your blog and have enjoyed reading it... seems you have many fans on here! I have a good friend who also trained for the Olympics - gymnanstics twice. He was injured the first time and second time just missed being an alternate. He now is assistant coach of the women's UCLA team. Seeing your emotion in Beijing brought back memories of what he went through and worked so hard for all of those years. It is truly wonderful that you've received this opportunity and I look forward to reading your future blogs. I am no athlete, but I have a great appreciate for what you all do (and I have been sleep deprived since the Olympics began.) Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Congrats :) I've seen you on TV.. And I live in Norway. Mostly they just show what Norwegians compete in... But when we aren't competing, at least they show other stuff :)
I hope you've enjoyed the Olympics and I hope you will enjoy rest of the summer!

Hey Dave how are you doing buddy, this is Jose. Hey i before there was a Dan Gill there was a Jose ok (Just Kidding)
Couple of things i just talk toy our mommy ok and lets clarify something i don't want to hear anything about you were not meant to be an olympian, you are an olympian no doubt in my mind so don't be confused about that, USAG doesn't have a say on that ok.
Another thing, i heard a rumor about 2012, let me clarify any doubt you may have..... you better go for, if there's anybody who deserve this opportunity and earned it it's you buddy ok, i probably had done just about anything to be there by your side in Beijing. You go for 2012 i will come out of retirement and try fo the Puerto Rican National Team, there goes your challenge. Your story will become bigger than any athlete's story ever tell.

Dave it have been an honor to have met you back in our training days and a bigger honor to have been your teammate for a little while back at Surgent's. My hope is that you grab that opportunity that have come your way and i promise i will do anything in my power to support you at your meets. You are a true inspiration and your frienship is one that can everybody wish for, what everyour future decisions are i know it will be the best ones for youself.

One word for your gymnastic career... BRAVO!!!!!

Take care and can you please give me a call on your free time. Take care.Talk to you soon.

Sincerely,
JOSE

I have really been enjoying your blog.  This is the first blog I've ever looked at, and it is so interesting to get your take on things.  It sounds like you are having some great experiences.  I just put Brianna on a plane to go back to London and that made me think about this time last year.  We got to see you compete in San Jose and win the USA men's championship.  It was very exciting for us to be there, and we were so happy for you.  I've been fortunate to see you in three competitions and at each one you have been amazing.  You are an incredible athlete.  That is obvious to anyone who sees you compete, but you have shown us that you are so much more.  The way you have responded to the turn of events of this Olympics has been to take the high road.  I do not believe there are many people who would have handled themselves with equal strength and grace.  We have all seen the quality of your character, and I hope you know what a positive impact your words and actions have had on so many people.  I barely know you Dave, and yet I am so proud of you.  I wish you the best in life, where ever you path leads you (and if your path ever brings you out our way, we would love to see you again).  Good luck, Sally

Hi Dave,
I'm glad to hear that you and your parents had such a great time in beijing, by the way those silkworms are great for recovery after a hard workout, high in protein LOL. I just wanted to say how proud we all are of you back home and although you didnt get a chance to compete you showed the world what it means to be a true teammate. You represented yourself with more class than most people in your position would have, and you should be very proud of that. I wish you all the luck in the world in whatever you decide to do in the future. Hope to see you soon. Amedeo

I can't believe I just found your blog! I was cheering you on from the stands at the Olympic Trials and felt let down each time I found out you remained an alternate. I cannot even begin to imagine what a mix of emotions you must have had. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am truly amazed by your positivity and your class. I really enjoyed all of your energy at the trials (esp. your second day). You are an amazing athlete and such an unbelievably strong man. Thank you so much.
I was disappointed to see you will not be on the tour, what happened? Your pic was up for a while on the website and then it was suddenly gone. I am still going next week to see the rest of the team, but I will be thinking of how great it would be to see you perform again. Keep us posted on how you are and what you are up to. I hope you are well.
