What a Day!!

WOW!! That was definitely one of the most memorable days of my life. I really can't put into words what Team Finals was like yesterday...but I'll try. I knew this team was capable of a great performance, and what ended up happening was something very special. As I watched the competition from the stands, I was in awe of the display USA Team put on. They competed inspired and it seemed like they were in a collective zone. I remember thinking, around the end of the third event, that this was our day and that we were going to do something great. As we finished the competition on pommel horse and secured the bronze medal, it became a very emotional moment for me. At the time I didn't realize that NBC had a camera on me, but I found out later on that I was crying on TV. I honestly couldn't hold back the tears at that moment. It was the culmination of what I had trained for my entire life, and I wanted to be on that floor sharing in that moment with those guys. I got down on the floor and I told each guy how impressed and proud I was of what they accomplished. Those bronze medals are beautiful, and in a lot of ways that medal is as good as gold for us. As an alternate I didn't get a medal, but I did share in their celebration and I felt as much a part of that team as they did.
Afterwards, it became a crazy day of media events. We went from a press conference, to a show on Oxygen about the Olympics, to Access Hollywood, to being live on the Today Show. I also did a video interview for Today.com which was fun. After we finished we headed to the USA House where the USOC had a party for us. Many members of the USOC and IOC Board of Directors were there. It was an real honor to meet them. All of our families came too, so it was great to have everyone together after such a big night.
I can't say enough about how grateful I am to be part of this incredible team. They have allowed me to share in there success and really feel like am part of this medal performance. In my heart I feel very much a part of this team, but to know that they feel the same way makes it even better. We are all very close and for the rest of our lives we will have a bond that most people will never understand. Many people doubted that we could do anything significant at these Games, and last night we showed what can happen when you believe in yourself and your teammates, and not what negative people have to say. I have no doubt that this will lead to many future medals for the US over the years as we continue do what others might not be able to...and that's make an individual sport like gymnastics, a sport that is team oriented. The team is what matters first...always.

I am new to blogging and today was the first day I ever searched random blogs and how cool I ran into yours! I was so proud to watch you on tv and your team win bronze metal! I am definitely a huge fan of gymnastics and what a show!! My son is 4 and he too is in AWWW of all the athletes capabilities. I love seeing his eyes light up when I tell him he could do that some day too if he really worked hard. I was annoyed at the announcers saying at the beginning of the Olympics that your team may not come close to metal but how doubly cool you proved them wrong!! Don't worry about crying on tv. You should be proud to show emotion and it shows all of us that you are not just a robot. This Colorado Springs lady is very proud of you and your team! Thanks for bringing my family hope to achieve their dreams and God Bless.

I was watching the finals and when they put a camera you and I saw that you were crying it made me start to tear up. It was so emotional. Sasha did an amazing last routine to secure the bronze and Horton he was such a inspiration it seemed like cheering for his team and encouraging everyone of them.

Dave,
I'm not sure if you remember us, but we wanted you to know how proud of you we are. Several years ago, you gave Daniel some private gymnastics lessons at Surgent's during your Christmas break from Stanford, and he loved and remembered every minute of that time. Your enthusiasm was as inspirational then as it is now. You provided a wonderful example of someone truly dedicated to what he does--someone to truly look up to. As Daniel got older, I often referred to you as someone who, despite many sacrifices, was doing EVERYTHING to reach for their dreams. It's worth it! I thank you for being such a good role model.
Since then, we have followed your career and progress, and have cheered from afar every step of the way. While, as you said, your Olympic story didn't end quite the way you (and Daniel and I) hoped it would, the poise, dignity, and enthusiasm you showed during this time remain an absolute inspiration to us. We were cheering with you as your team achieved the bronze medal (and yes, we were also wishing more than anything that you were actually on the floor.) We loved watching Justin, especially, as well, since Daniel had also met him at IGC a few summers ago. And the tears? Of course we get it. It's the the culmination of every emotion, high and low, you've had all coming together in one moment. Our eyes were tearing up with you.
So congratulations to YOU on a phenomenal career. What I've learned over the years is that the final endpoint isn't always the most important thing, it's the journey. You've had a spectacular, inspirational journey, and the many special moments and the friendships you've made will stay with you forever.
So enjoy the rest of your Olympic experience-- soak in every minute! (And keep up the blog--we'll be following along!) (And if you have a "congratulations party" at Surgent's when you return to NJ, we'd love to come by and say "hi".) And good luck to you as you soon begin the next chapter of your life--We're certain the the best is yet to come!

Sincerely, Janice and Daniel

I'm here from the "Blogs of Note" as well - and so very glad to have found your blog. I, too, teared up when the camera was on you last night and I could see how very much you wanted to be on that floor with your team. I must say that the men's team finals was one of the most exciting Olympic events I have ever seen and I am so very proud of all of you. Congratulations to all team USA members. Enjoy every minute of your time in China and I'll look forward to reading about your experience!

Cheers!

You still continue to amaze me. I watched the other night and then saw you on Oxygen. Good job on banging the gong! You are truly a part of that team and your story is such a great one for us back here in the States.

I just wanted to say, thank you for sharing your thoughts on the team's bronze-medal win. I was so impressed when the cameras would show you in the stands, standing up and cheering like it was nobody's business, and then to be crying when they won... it was very touching. It was so obvious that you cared about that team like they were family, and not begrudging them that they were on the floor and you were in the stands. That speaks very highly of you, and I wanted to say thanks for showing what a true champion is. Best wishes.

WOW! You are an amazing athlete, and more than that you are the kind of athlete that the U.S. can be really proud of producing. I've been following gymnastics for many, many years and have been watching you for the past six (I attended the Olympic trials in Anaheim and Philadelphia). You've given your entire life to the sport and my heart felt for you when you didn't make the team.

But unlike an alternate who was a poor sport four years ago and then this year (until he made the team), you've always held your head up high and praised your fellow athletes and country to no end. I give you a standing ovation for that.

Thank you for being a First Class act all the way, and you've won the Gold medal in Excellent Sportsmanship from this New York City fan. I hope that you continue to be a part of this beautiful sport and can't wait to see what you do next! GO TEAM USA!

I just want to say how proud am of the Men's Gymnastics Team. I saw you all on TV, too, and was rooting you on. I'm watching the Individual All Around right now. I am so impressed by all of you no matter the color of the medal (or even no medal for that matter). I was always the kid who wanted to learn gymnastics but couldn't get past a cartwheel roundoff and standing backbend. So good work and I am so proud of you.

And THANK YOU for repesenting the U.S.A.!

hi guy
most times i read your blog but today i just felt like making a post about the Olympics.Have you noticed anything about the games,i mean how some countries are chunking up points while others are still in limbo.I saw a disparity in the games will someone please tell me why games like shooting, fencing, canoeing, and even your sport attract only Europe and the Americas, why and other places like Africa don't even take a windfall from this medal hull

David, y'all are truly an American Dream Team. I believed in you all the way and was ecstatic with the way all of you represented the USA! Your emotion and leadership even from the stands spoke volumes. The men's gymnastics team truly exemplifies what it is to have great character above all else and truly exemplifies what all US Olympians should strive for. Congratulations!

I have an eight-year old son and this is really the first Olympics he has been old enough to get into. It's been great family entertainment watching the whole thing - but we have really enjoyed watching your sport and it's been a wonderful opportunity to show my son a true example of what it means to be a "team player". Congrats!!

Hi Dave,

Congratulations on your team's bronze medal! It was amazing to watch. I have a question: Do you think you will continue on with gymnastics and try to go to London or are you going to pursue other things?

Thank you for inspiring myself and so many! Go USA!
